Types of Zippers
Common Types of Zippers and Their Applications
Understanding different zipper types helps you choose the right closure for your project, ensuring both functionality and professional results.
By Installation Method
Centered Zipper
A classic, visible closure with stitching lines on both sides of the seam. Use a standard zipper foot and mark your stitch lines ¼” from the seam for precision. Best for shirts, dresses, and casual wear.
Invisible Zipper
This zipper hides within the seam, showing only a clean line on the garment’s exterior. The coils curl under when pressed, requiring a special press before sewing. Essential for formal dresses and skirts where a clean finish is desired.
Lapped Zipper
A traditional zipper concealed behind a fabric flap, topstitched in place. It uses a regular zipper foot and is a very common application for skirts and trousers, offering durability and a tailored look.
Exposed Zipper
The zipper itself becomes a decorative element on the outside of the garment. Available in metallic, colored, or satin tapes, it’s ideal for fashion-forward jackets or bags. For lightweight fabrics, interface the opening for stability.
By Chain Opening
Open-Ended (Separating) Zippers
Used in jackets, hoodies, and coats where the two sides must separate completely. The zipper starts and stops at the top, with a special mechanism at the bottom.
Closed-Ended Zippers
Standard for dresses, skirts, cushions, and bags where the zipper remains closed at one end (the bottom stop is a metal bar). It is sewn into a seam and does not separate.
By Tooth Material
| Type | Best For | Key Features |
|---|---|---|
| Nylon Coil | Garments, bags, home décor | Flexible, lightweight, and the most common. Often has monochrome tape and small pulls. |
| Metal | Jeans, leather jackets, bags, boots | Extremely durable with a sturdy, often decorative pull. More difficult to shorten and sew around due to the larger slider. |
| Invisible | Formal dresses, skirts, pants | Nylon coil teeth are on the back, hiding within a seam. Requires a special foot or careful technique with a regular foot. |
| Molded Plastic | Jackets, backpacks, sportswear, kids’ wear | Features large, interlocking plastic teeth. Very durable and comes in many colors. |
Choose your zipper based on the project’s needs—strength, flexibility, visibility, or decorative appeal—for a perfect and professional finish.
