Sew an Invisible Zipper (videotutorial)

How to Sew an Invisible Zipper: A Clean, Hidden Finish

An invisible zipper creates a sleek, uninterrupted seam line in dresses, skirts, and trousers. With careful preparation, it’s a technique any sewer can master for a truly professional look.

What You’ll Need

  • An invisible zipper

  • A zipper foot or invisible zipper foot

  • Sewing machine

  • Pins or fabric clips

  • Fabric marker or chalk

  • Iron and pressing cloth

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Prepare the Fabric

Finish the raw edges of your seam allowance with a serger or zigzag stitch to prevent fraying. Mark the zipper’s exact placement on the fabric using a fabric marker or tailor’s chalk. This ensures perfect alignment and a straight seam.

2. Prepare the Zipper

Open the zipper completely. Using a warm iron (on a synthetic/low setting), gently press the coiled teeth away from the tape so they lie flat. Be careful not to melt the plastic. This crucial step allows the zipper to sit correctly against the seam line.

3. Pin and Sew the First Side

With the zipper still open and right sides together, place the left side of the zipper tape against the right seam allowance of your fabric. Align the pressed coils with your marked seam line. Pin or clip the tape in place.
Attach your zipper foot. Stitch from the top down, guiding the needle as close to the coils as possible. The foot’s groove should help you sew right alongside them.

4. Pin and Sew the Second Side

Zip the zipper up halfway to align the other side of the garment. Place the right side of the remaining zipper tape against the left seam allowance, matching the coils to the seam line. Unzip it fully again, then pin and stitch this side the same way as the first.

5. Close the Seam Below the Zipper

Zip the garment up. Change to a standard presser foot. Start stitching the remaining seam about half an inch above the end of your zipper stitching, backtracking to the very end of the zipper seam to lock it in. Continue sewing the rest of the seam closed. This method prevents a gap at the base of the zipper.

6. Press and Finish

Press the seams carefully from both the inside and outside. Gently steam the area to help the fabric settle and the zipper coils roll back into their hidden position. Test the zipper to ensure it glides smoothly and remains invisible from the right side.

Helpful Tips for Best Results

  • Test First: Always practice the technique on a fabric scrap to adjust your machine’s tension and get a feel for the foot.

  • Quality Matters: A well-made invisible zipper feeds through the machine more easily and wears better over time.

  • Patience Pays Off: Go slowly, especially when sewing next to the coils. Perfect alignment is the key to invisibility.

  • Press as You Go: Don’t skip pressing the zipper coils open before you start—it makes all the difference.
