How to Shorten a Zipper: A Simple Guide
Sometimes the perfect zipper is just too long. Learn to shorten it quickly with basic tools for a custom fit in any project.
What You’ll Need
Zipper (metal or plastic)
Sharp scissors
Ruler or measuring tape
Fabric marker or chalk
Needle and strong thread
Pliers (for metal zippers)
Zipper stops (optional)
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Measure & Mark
Determine needed length for your project
Mark cutting point on both sides of zipper tape
Add ¾” extra below mark for finishing
2. Prepare the Zipper
For Plastic Zippers:
Sew 5-6 stitches across tape at marked point
Cut 1″ above stitches
Seal cut end with lighter flame (briefly)
For Metal Zippers:
Use pliers to remove teeth above mark
Sew reinforcement stitches across tape
Trim excess tape
3. Create New Stops
Option A: Thread Stops (Most common)
Sew back and forth across tape 6-8 times
Create dense “bar tack” with strong thread
Option B: Metal Stops
Position stops just above cut line
Crimp firmly with pliers
Option C: Fabric Glue
Apply strong fabric glue across tape
Let dry completely before testing
4. Test & Finish
Slide zipper up to new stop several times
Ensure smooth operation
Trim any fraying threads
Press with iron if needed
Quick Tips
Always shorten from top (teeth end), not bottom
Use heavier thread (denim or upholstery weight)
For invisible zippers, shorten from bottom only
Practice first on an old zipper
Shortening zippers takes just minutes but makes all your projects look professionally customized.
