How to Print a Sewing Pattern with a home printer (videotutorial)

How to Download, Print, and Assemble PDF Sewing Patterns

Follow these six simple steps to properly prepare your PDF pattern for a perfect fit and easy cutting.

Step 1: Download & Open

  1. Download the pattern PDF to your computer

  2. Use only Adobe Acrobat Reader (free download: get.adobe.com/reader)

  3. Avoid browsers or preview apps – they often resize patterns incorrectly

Step 2: Select Your Size

  • Click the Layers icon (left sidebar in Adobe Reader)

  • Show only your size(s) – uncheck all other sizes

  • This creates a clean, uncluttered printout

Step 3: Print the Test Square

  1. Find the 2×2 cm (or 1×1 inch) test square page

  2. Print Settings:

    • Paper Size: A4 or Letter (as specified)

    • Page Scaling: Actual Size or 100%

    • Orientation: Auto

    • Margins: None or Default

  3. Measure Immediately: Use a ruler – square must measure exactly 2×2 cm

  4. Adjust if needed: If incorrect, check printer settings and retest

Step 4: Print Full Pattern

  • Same settings as test square

  • Print all pages (check “All” in print dialog)

  • Use normal quality to save ink – high resolution isn’t needed

  • Keep pages in order as they print

Step 5: Assemble Pages

  1. Trim Method (Recommended):

    • Cut off margin lines or fold along dotted edges

    • Match symbols/numbers at page edges

    • Tape from front, checking alignment on back

  2. Layout Guide:

    • Reference the provided grid diagram

    • Assemble row by row

    • Use removable tape for initial adjustments

Step 6: Prepare for Cutting

Option A: Direct Cutting

  • Cut along your selected size line

  • Add seam allowances if not included

  • Label all pieces immediately

Option B: Tracing (Recommended)

  • Use tracing paper, medical paper, or Swedish tracing paper

  • Trace all markings: notches, grainlines, darts

  • Preserves original for other sizes/future use
